Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370674 AB CONCERN is an Irish Voluntary Organisation struggling with communities to cope with the socio-economic consequences of AIDS in Rakai District, Uganda. OBJECTIVES: (i)--To provide AIDS Education and promote, Behavioural change in the minds of 1000 youth at grass root levels. (ii) To encourage the young generation identify possible income generating projects through, Needs Assessement to promote self-reliancy. METHODS: 1. CONCERN village workers helped in identification of active-organised youth groups engaged in various activities in Kyotera, Rakai District--Uganda. (2) Needs Assessement was made. (3) AIDS Education Workshops with 503 youth were conducted and other issues related to AIDS discussed. (4) A series of training programmes on Income Generating Activities plus other rising social aspects were held. RESULTS: More than 500 youth were given AIDS Education Awareness. There are so many indicators of, Behavioural change. Increased requests for AIDS Education and other specialised trainings. More than 400 youth are engaged in Income Generating Projects with improved skills and knowledge. Many youth are now self-reliant. CONCLUSION: It has been discovered that HIV/AIDS is not a priority subject for the youth, their priorities and CONCERNs are good living, recognition, acceptance in society, relation ships, future and security. Lastly, youth problems can only be solved with their participation in early stages.
